A 5-door car features four side doors and a boot that provides access to the cabin. In other words, the total number of doors includes the boot, but only if it allows access to the interior. Explore our full selection of 5-door cars here.
A 5-door car comes with a driver’s door, a front passenger door, two rear passenger doors, and a rear hatch or tailgate that counts as the fifth door, provided you can access the cabin through it by folding down the back seats. If the boot is fully separated from the cabin, the car is classed as a 4-door car.
5-door cars are ideal if you regularly use the rear seats, making them especially well-suited for families. The extra rear doors make it much easier to place a child in a car seat or to help passengers in and out comfortably.
Many families also appreciate the added flexibility of being able to fold down part of the rear seat to expand boot space. Most modern hatchbacks are 5-door by design, and estate cars (station wagons) always have five doors.
5-door cars are the most popular choice in the UK due to their easy and direct access to the rear seats. This also makes them easier to resell compared to 3-door versions of the same model.

In addition, the shorter front doors on 5-door cars make them easier to open in tight parking spaces. They also improve accessibility, as the seatbelt is usually anchored just behind the door, making it easier to reach from the driver’s or passenger’s seat.
